Day 23: Buy a pet guinea pig

I was out shopping with my friend Rebecca today and we walked past this cute little guinea pig. I thought how adorable and instantly I wanted it.

I have never bought my own pet before. Growing up we didn't have any pets. We once had a little peachface bird that flew into our backyard and didn't leave. So we made a little cage for it and adopted it as our pet. A few days later it passed away. Well that is what my mum and dad said. I think they just left the cage door open on purpose.

Most recently, we had a little black rabbit come to our front garden. Mr Blacky as we named him. My father asked around if the baby rabbit belonged to anyone, but none of the neighbours owned it. We now have Mr Blacky living in our backyard in a pen like cage. He gets to eat all of my father's homegrown vegetables and even some of my mother's cooking.

But I have never bought my own pet, and I suppose I am not really a pet person. I love wild animals and like to learn about them, like giraffes, elephants and penguins, but I am not a fan of domestic animals. I am not the type of person who walks pass a pet shop and wants to go in and have a look. I usually hold my breath to avoid that pet shop smell.

But today, this little guinea pig stole my heart. I decided to call her Miss Mulberry. Mulberry also being a colour and matching the name for our pet rabbit, Mr Blacky.

I was really excited to come home and show my parents the new addition to the family. I thought it would be no problem for Miss Mulberry to share her home with Mr Blacky. However, my father was not impressed and he said there was no way Miss Mulberry could live safely together with Mr Blacky in the same cage. So I decided to keep Miss Mulberry in my bedroom, safe and sound.

My mother wasn't impressed with that idea. I couldn't understand why. I said Miss Mulberry is very clean, she doesn't make much noise and she won't require too much attention. She doesn't eat either.

Anyway I am happy to have finally purchased my own sweet, adorable guinea pig pet.

The best pet anyone could ever own.
